Rewards Credit Cards
Australian Rewards Credit Cards normally award you points when you use your credit card to purchase something; these are redeemable for cash payments, air miles, cheap or free flights or travel benefits such as hotel rooms or car hire, or for buying goods at participating retailers (often department stores, supermarkets etc.)
Other credit card rewards will give you discounts at participating retailers at the time of purchase so that you get instant benefit.
Some of these cards have "teasers" to encourage you to sign up, such as a block of initial points when you join.
Benefits of Rewards Credit Cards
Most rewards credit cards work well if you are financially organised enough to pay off your credit card debt in full every month and avoid potentially high interest rates.
Some have "honeymoon" low interest rates as well as rewards…. if that's the case then check when the low interest rate ends and what it jumps up to afterwards.
Again, if you are financially savvy enough to take advantage of the introductory rate and then switch between cards once the higher rate kicks in it may be worth considering.
Potential Drawbacks of Credit Card Rewards
If the accompanying APR is high this usually means that card holders who are not as financially onm top of things can end up paying far more in interest payments than they will ever receive in discounts in shops, flights, cheap hotel rooms or cash back.
For most people rewards should be treated as an added extra rather than a main factor in your decision of which credit card to opt for.
