Frequent flyer credit cards and airline cards allow you to collect miles for every purchase you make with your card, which you accumulate and cash in for free or discounted flights, upgrades, hotel stays, car rentals or other travel-rated perks.
Some cards will also give you access to special airport lounges, if you travel frequently and they may include a batch of initial points as a "teaser" to get you to sign up.
These programmes shouldn't be confused with the Frequent Flyer schemes that the airlines themselves run as loyalty schemes and reward their passengers with miles for flying with them every time.
Benefits of Frequent Flyer Credit Cards
In the same way that cash back programs are attractive perks, a Frequent Flyer credit card works well for people if all the other features of the card work well too. It is not usually a main reason to choose one card over another.
If you are financially organised enough to pay off your balance in full every month then a frequent flyer credit card can give you excellent rewards over time.
Potential Drawbacks of Frequent Flyer Credit Cards
Unless you travel frequently and can rack up the reward miles to their full, these cards may not be worthwhile.
Also, don’t be fooled by the perks! Many reward credit cards are only worth considering if you pay your balance off in full each month because, if the accompanying interest rates are high, the interest you pay on purchases will far outweigh the advantages you get from the frequent flyer miles.
