Mobile Broadband Report Part 2: What is mobile broadband?

July, 2010

When we sit down to our computers to use the web, we enjoy pictures and text and video but, as we have just seen, out interactivity is the result of many packets of data moving back and forth between us and other servers. Those packets need to get from our computer to other servers and back to our computer. Traditionally, wires have been used and the internet user was "tied" to his or her desk, and could only use the internet as long as they were hard-wired to cables. If someone wanted to use their laptop, they'd have to unplug from the internet to do so.

But now, thanks to mobile broadband service, we don't have to rely on them anymore. Mobile broadband providers give us wireless access to the web.

Mobile broadband service uses transmitting or broadcasting devices in our computer or laptop devices to send and receive data from a router. In our home, that router is probably connected to a telephone cable, data cable, or dedicated internet cable. So although wires are involved, it is wireless between your computer and your router.

The concept is the same for mobile phones, too. Your mobile will send and receive data from the nearest tower, which is not that different from a giant router that everyone can use.

As long as your computer device (your computer, laptop, or mobile phone) remains in the approved proximity to the router (either your wifi router or the mobile tower), you can use that device to access mobile broadband service and interact on the web.
