How To Choose The Right Broadband Internet Package

July, 2010

As a general rule, the higher the connection speed, the more satisfying the Internet experience. Download amounts are not usually a major factor unless you tend to go over your limit regularly and have to pay extra every month.

Choosing the right broadband internet package starts with understanding your own Internet usage.

Light Internet Usage

If you tend to use the Internet mainly for browsing, email and Facebook, and you don't use it 24/7, then you won't need as high of a connection speed or download limit in your broadband services package.

Example

Jack only goes online in the evenings when he gets home from work. He checks his email and posts a message on Facebook then finishes. For him, the internet is about connecting with friends and family but it's not a central point of connection in his life.

Moderate Internet Usage

If you tend to use the internet frequently (for example if you are online throughout the day), you might prefer a higher speed with a moderate download limit.

Example

Mary is a stay-at-home-mom who relies on the web as a way to keep connected to friends and other stay-at-home-moms through Facebook and other social media. Once in while she'll view a video on YouTube. When she's online, she wants a fairly fast connection; she's online a lot but doesn't stream a lot of video.

Heavy Internet Usage

If you are an active online gamer or you like streaming movies or music, a broadband internet package with the highest speed and a large download limit is probably the best for you.

Example

Between semesters at school, Christopher plays a lot of online games, battling against other online gamers in "first person shooter" games. His high speed gives him an edge over others who do not have such a fast connection.

Choosing a Suitable Package

Chances are, even if you do not identify specifically with one of these people, you can "map" your usage along similar lines to one of the people listed above. Determine where on the spectrum of speed and download you fit in.

Then, find providers offering broadband internet packages and compare them in terms of speed and download caps.

Once you've selected several packages from providers that offer the speed and download limits you need, check out the prices to find something in line with your budget.

If you find that the prices are lower than what you budgeted, you can either increase your spec or just pay less than you were expecting each month.

Alternatively, if you find that the prices are higher than what you budgeted, you will need to revise your budget or lower your speed and download limit expectations.

By following these steps, you'll find the best broadband package for your requirements.
